UC Berkeley, Dept. of Demography

(Spring 2011 M-W-F 3-4PM in 110 Barrows)
Sections: W 2-3PM ; Th 4-5PM 2232 Piedmont Rm 101

Expectations

  1. Contribution to class: It is expected that students will have completed the assigned readings before class and be prepared to share their insights. In addition, students will make brief class presentations in order to share the results of lab assignments. As noted below, your contribution to the class will have a modest (ε sized) impact on your course grade. Contribution will be measured by your performance on small number of very short unannounced quizzes, by the quality of class presentations and by other more subjective criteria, such as the quality of insights offered in class and in sections and office hours.
  2. Proficiency in the use of a spreadsheet program: It will be necessary to use a spreadsheet in order to complete the lab assignments. Students are responsible for developing this proficiency on their own. No course time will be spent teaching spreadsheet skills.
  3. Promptness: Labs must be recieved in email by the date they are due. Since lab results will be presented in class, Late lab reports will be penalized very heavily. Unannounced quizzes will be given during the first five minutes of class. Students arriving late on those days will have to stare out the window until the quizzes are collected.

Grades

Grades will be based on 3 exams; 3.5 Lab assignments; and on contribution to the class.
