Adult Mortality
From 2001 to 2003 I worked as a research assistant
for Professor John Wilmoth and Professor Kenneth Hill on the project
Adult Mortality in Developing Countries.
The research focused on both substantive and methodological issues
for measuring adult mortality in developing countries and on levels,
trends and patterns of such mortality. The papers presented at the
Adult Mortality in Developing Countries Workshop (July/2004) can be found
here. I worked with Kenneth Hill on a methodological paper
adapting indirect mortality methods to migration, and on a paper with
John Wilmoth and Danzhen You comparing data quality for eight
populations over various time periods.
Marriage Market
The paper The Impacts of Sex Ratios on Marriage Markets in the
United States was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Population
Association of America in Boston (April/2004).
Abstract:Sex ratios, the ratio between the number
of males per female in a population, can affect decisions regarding
marriage, marriage prospects and outcomes. Sex ratios are a good
indicator of the availability of mates in a population and this play
an important role when individuals are considering marriage. This
paper uses the local marriage market sex ratios in the US
(metropolitan areas) to study how the availability of individuals from
the different sex affects decisions towards marriage and the selection
of mates. The empirical results suggests that high sex ratios (more
males than females) reduces the number of single females in a
population, increases the number of single males and have a negative
effect on the age differential between couples. Also, individual
outcomes such as schooling and income level are much more related to
individual and regional characteristics than to sex ratios. Sex ratios
also appear to have little or no effect on the mating process, I
observe that individuals tend to marry others with similar educational
levels despite of the different availability of mates in a
region.
Regional Wage Differential
The paper Regional Wage Differentials and
Social Returns to Education was presented at the Annual Meeting
of the Population Association of
America in Minneapolis (May/2003).
Abstract:This paper contributes to the study of
the regional wage differentials in Brazil. More specifically, examines
the importance of personal attributes and regional characteristics in
the observed variability of regional wages in Brazil. The paper makes
two new contributions. First, it uses an alternative methodology,
Hierarchical Linear Models. Second it analyzes counties in one
particular state instead of studying metropolitan areas as is commonly
done. The study finds regional effects on wage differentials and
social effects of human capital in the regions .
